Lawyers from both sides of the ABA/Independent Bookseller suit against Barnes & Noble and Borders were scheduled to appear before Judge William H. Orrick in U.S. District Court in San Francisco this week for what is expected to be a final pre-trial hearing. The hearing comes just days before the scheduled opening of the trial before Judge Orrick.
Women & Children First Bookstore in Chicago is among the independent stores testifying against alleged unfair business practices by the chain stores, and co-owner Ann Christophersen is among those scheduled to testify in the lawsuit. A new chain store is scheduled to open soon within about one mile of Women & Children First. Hundreds of independent bookstores, including many feminist and GLBT outlets, have folded since the explosion of the chainstores several years ago.
