Tens of thousands of dollars worth of items will be auctioned off during a special live auction on the 6th Annual “Cruising 6 … Because We Care” Jazz Brunch Cruise sponsored by the Lesbian Community Cancer Project. The fundraiser is Sunday, Sept. 16 on the Odyssey cruise ship, docked at Navy Pier.
“There are really some amazing auction items donated for this year’s cruise,” said Gary Rice, event co-chair with Sharon Mylrea. Cruisers will have an opportunity to bid on a Nabisco Dinah Shore Weekend package that includes airfare and attendance at parties. There are also special weekend packages for New York and San Francisco travel on American Airlines and hotel stays, downtown Chicago hotel and theater treats, a catered party for 20, an Andersonville dining and shopping package, and many more live auction items.
The champagne pre-reception featuring complimentary champagne, bloody marys and hors d’oeuvres begins at 10 a.m. The jazz band From the Edge featuring Laurie Lee Moses will entertain pre-cruise guests. Regular registration begins at 11 a.m., boarding starts at 11:30 a.m. and the boat sets sail from Noon until 2 p.m. Brunch, live music and a live auction round out the event.
“We also want to make sure women and men who are single have an opportunity to mingle,” said LCCP Executive Director Jessica Halem. “We will have singles tables and encourage opportunities for people to meet and socialize.”
Tickets for “Cruising 6 … Because We Care” are $90 for regular admission and $125 for the pre-reception. Premiere “Passport” tickets are $250 and $500, and these include special give-away items.
A special “after-cruise” party will be held for the first time this year, at Joe’s Be-Bop Cafe on Navy Pier, featuring Penelope Walker. The after-party is 2:15-4:30 p.m. and $10 with a cruise ticket, or $25 for the after-party only.
