One year after the original AIDS Walk Chicago held its last fundraising benefit for its agencies, a newly configured AIDS Run and Walk was held on a cold and rainy Sunday along the lakefront Sept. 23.

The new entity is owned by the for-profit Chicago Special Events company, and the nearly $200,000 in proceeds from this year’s walk will go to the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. Corporate underwriting covered all of the overhead costs for the event.

An estimated 10,000 runners and walkers, from the city and suburbs, and of all ages and backgrounds, participated in the event. There was also an interfaith service featuring 15 local religious leaders who offered “consoling thoughts for America and victims of the recent U.S. terrorist attacks, as well as victims of hate crimes and those affected by AIDS,” organizers noted.
