Amigas Latinas held their second annual Aixa Diaz Scholarship dinner benefit last weekend at My Fair Lady Banquet Hall. More than 150 women and men helped celebrate and raise several thousand dollars for the scholarship, given to a Latina youth in honor of Aixa Diaz, a steering committee member of Amigas who passed away several years ago. The scholarship is presented through the annual Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network scholarship program in Chicago. Vidalina Diaz, a longtime friend of Aixa’s and a fellow teacher at the Mozart School, accepted a $1,000 check on behalf of the school. The funds will help buy books for the children…another goal of the Diaz fund. A live auction helped raise additional funds, and Juanita Crespo at right helped model a used police leather jacket that raised more than $700.
