The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Dec. 17 that a West Chester school which was debating whether to name itself after gay civil-rights leader Bayard Rustin has backed down and will now be called Bayard Rustin High School.
After a long debate over Rustin’s beliefs, the board voted 6-3–the school will open in 2005.
The paper said: “The sometimes acrimonius debate over whether to name a school for a civil-rights leader who also was gay, a one-time Communist who refused to serve during World War II, ended late tonight with the school board voting to name its newest school for Bayard Rustin.”
