Cook County Crime Stoppers has unanimously selected Cook County State’s Attorney Mike McHale to to receive their 2003 Excellence in Law Enforcement award.

Crime stoppers is honoring McHale for his aggressive response to hate crimes in the wake of Sept. 11. He recently completed an assignment in the state’s attorney’s Community Prosecutions Unit, which handles hate-crimes prosecutions.

McHale, who is also a gay political activist, is a 12-year veteran of the State’s Attorney’s Office and is now assigned to the Old Homicide Unit.

The award will be presented March 11.
