With the ACLU on her side, Klein High School Junior Marla Dukler finally won the right to start a gay straight alliance at her conservative high school in Houston.
Administration at the school rejected her request after she had already been told that signatures of the parents whose children would attend was all she would need. The ACLU made clear to the district that failure to allow the club to meet was against federal law, and that they would take costly action if Dukler’s demands were not met. After the school agreed to let the alliance exist, Dukler said ‘We hope to start working on changes to make our school safer immediately.’
