The Boston Globe reports that most of the Democratic presidential candidates back gay civil unions, while former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean is the only one who has signed such a measure into law. Reps. Richard Gephardt and Dennis Kucinich, the Rev. Al Sharpton, Howard Dean, Sen. John Kerry, and former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun all back such unions. Sharpton and Kucinich back even gay marriages.
Meanwhile, Sens. John Edwards, Bob Graham and Joseph Lieberman stop short of backing unions, but don’t oppose them—Edwards and Lieberman said the issue should be left to states, while Graham said it deserves further study, the Globe reported.
All nine candidates back domestic-partner benefits.
Gephardt has a daughter who is gay, ‘a fact he and his campaign neither conceal nor trumpet,’ the Globe reported.
