While most of the March 16 primary results were clear-cut for the winning Democrats and Republicans, the results are still too close to call in the 8th Subcircuit Judicial race. And this is the race that just happens to have two gay men and a lesbian among the four seeking the post.

As of Monday, March 22, openly lesbian attorney Sheryl Pethers was still ahead by about 50 votes. The Cook County Board of Elections has provisional ballots to count, and given how tight the race is, there could be a court challenge. Ballot results may not be announced until April 6.

Pethers leads by about 1/10th of one percent over gay candidate Jon Erickson.

Pethers said she does not expect very many provisional ballots. These are ballots from people whose status was questioned by election judges, and who then signed affidavits saying they were who they said they were. Those are the ballots to be counted.
