Since partnering with screenwriter Paz Alicia Garciadiego, iconoclastic Mexican filmmaker Arturo Ripstein has focused his ‘elegant, visceral, and ferociously cathartic films’ on the destructive passions of mothers.
In a room festooned with Mother’s Day decor, Columbia College Professor Carmelo Esterrich will lead a conversation about Ripstein and Garciadiego’s
appropriation and transformation of the Mexican family melodrama. Esterrich’s presentation, Tearing Mother Apart: the Films of Arturo Ripstein and Paz Alicia Garciadiego, will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 6 in the Fifth Floor East Meeting Room of the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E.
