Oprah Winfrey had an amazing show May 13 on trans issues—in kids as young as five. There were girls who want to be boys, and boys who want to be girls—and parents who ranged from anti- to very supportive. Oprah was definitely pushing for acceptance, and seemed to convince one dad to buy his child the girl toys they desired.
Voices of Pride, the gay men’s chorus in the Florida Palm Beaches, says they’re out $12,000 because the Catholic school they’ve been practicing in has cancelled their performance, according to the Sun Sentinel. The group had been practicing for nine months at Rosarian Academy when the academy told the group the content of the show was unacceptable. A spokesman for the school said the ‘adult acts’ were inappropriate for a Catholic school. The group performed for the West Palm Beach City Council. Mayor Lois Frankel told the Sentinel there was nothing controversial in what she saw.
Colonial House, a PBS miniseries about life in Colonial America, addressed homosexuality in last night’s episode, reports Relish. Actor Jonathon Allen, 24, plays an indentured servant in the series and decided to come out of the closet on the program. Producer Sallie Clement said she had difficulty determining what the punishment would have been for an openly gay man in Colonial days. The episode re-airs Sunday morning at 3:30.
Actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, Moonlight Mile), though he’s straight, says he went through a time in his life when he was attracted to another man, reports Gay.com. Gyllenhaal, star of the upcoming Brokeback Mountain, plays Jack, a cowboy who falls in love with Ennis, played by Aussie heartthrob Heath Ledger (Monster’s Ball, The Patriot).
The Fox Network, home of reality shows The Swan and Joe Millionaire, will roll out a new show next week, reports the Washington Post. Seriously, Dude, I’m Gay, is touted as two straight men experiencing ‘what it’s like to live life as a gay man.’ After clubbing with gay men and even making out with a few, the straight men will face a ‘jury of their queers’ to see if they can pass for gay. The winner takes home $50,000. Fox apologized for the first press release which called being seen as gay ‘a heterosexual male’s worst nightmare,’ and called being gay a ‘lifestyle.’
