Fulfilling a promise by Council Speaker Gifford Miller and Councilmember Christine Quinn to NYC’s LGBT community, the City Council voted 41-4 to override Mayor Bloomberg’s veto of the Equal Benefits Bill (EBB).
The EBB requires employers with contracts of $100,000 or more from the city to provide the same benefits to employees with domestic partners that they provide to employees with spouses. Such benefits can include: health insurance; family, medical and bereavement leave, tuition reimbursement,moving and relocation expenses and dependent care insurance.
Today’s vote will have a more tangible impact on LGBT families than any measure ever passed by the City Council, according to activists.
