On Jan. 22—the 32nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade—the Illinois chapter of the National Organization for Women (Illinois NOW) announced the launch of the pro-abortion Keep Choice Alive campaign.
The campaign is scheduled to last throughout the year.
The organization and its local branches are asking people to e-mail their representatives as well as U.S. senators Dick Durbin and Barack Obama (www.elections.state.il.us).
Organizers also want people to take action in case a Supreme Court Justice resigns and President Bush makes a nomination; lobby legislators (state and federal) in their local offices; and keep in touch through meetings and Web sites.
Bonnie Grabenhofer, president of Illinois NOW, said in a statement that ‘ [n] either Bush nor Congress nor the Supreme Court belong [s] in our personal decisions. By the end of the month every senator and congressperson, Democrat or Republican, will know why they must use their vote to Keep Choice Alive.’
