The Jamaican Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals & Gays (J-FLAG) will be appearing in Chicago to talk about anti-gay violence and how it affects their community. Instances of violence include everything from torture by police to homophobic lyrics sung by leading recording artists.
A press conference will take place Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. at Rainbow/PUSH headquarters, 930 E. 50th. Later, a presentation by the organization will be held at The Charles Hayes Family Investment Center, 4859 S. Wabash, at 7 p.m. A reception will follow the latter presentation. No cameras or camera phones will be allowed at either event because of the potential backlash the J-FLAG activists could face.
The J-FLAG advocates are being honored by several organizations. Among them are Queer to the Left; The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission; Chicago NOW; Adodi Chicago; the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition; and the Windy City Media Group.
