If Anna Deavere Smith looks familiar, it’s because she’s a regular on The West Wing. But the award-winning author, playwright and performer also is a MacArthur Foundation ‘genius’ fellow, a tenured professor at New York University and creator of a Harvard University research institute. Her award-winning one-person theater works have addressed issues of race, community and character in America in a unique way. Anna Deavere Smith will inaugurate the Presidential Fellows in the Arts series at the University of Chicago next Tuesday (March 1) at 7 p.m. in Mandel Hall with a lecture/performance piece, Snapshots: Glimpses of America in Change. Tickets are only $15; (773) 702-8080.
