Knowing the warning signs of suicide can literally save someone’s life. Here are some danger signals to take note of, courtesy of the AFSP Web site:
Previous suicide attempts: Between 20 and 50 percent of those who kill themselves had tried it before.
Talking about death or suicide: If you hear statements such as ‘My family would be better off without me,’ take heed.
Planning for suicide: People who are thinking about suicide often arrange to put their affairs in order (e.g., paying off debts or changing wills).
Depression: Most depressed people are not suicidal; however, most suicidal people are depressed. Depression can encompass a number of factors, including change in appetite or weight; constant loss of concentration; feelings of worthlessness; serious insomnia; increased alcohol and/or drug use; and out-of-control feelings.
