Sex Education Activists (SEA), a student organization at the University of Chicago, held an event to raise awareness of the quality of sexuality education in Illinois schools. The event, called ‘Operation Sexucation,’ was held at 1212 E. 59th April 16.
Operation Sexucation featured tables that showcased everything from basic information to a ‘condom challenge.’ Among the other participants were Resources for Sexual Violence Prevention, the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent health, and the female adult business Early to Bed.
Jennifer Tamayo, one of the event’s organizers and a member of SEA, told Windy City Times that she was happy to see ‘a conglomeration of students from colleges, high schools, and organizations that are coming out to show support for comprehensive sex education and for empowering young people.’ She added that sex education has not been talked about as much as it should, ‘especially among young people.’
Regarding abstinence-only programs, Tamayo commented that young people are seeing ‘peers suffer the negative consequences of withholding really valuable information, so having [this event] being run by peers is really important.’
