The Rainbow Sash Movement (RSM), an LGBT Catholic organization, is tangling again with Cardinal George; this time, the issue is medicine.

According to an RSM press release, George has stated that he wants Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to rescind his order requiring state pharmacists to fill all prescriptions that can cause abortions. RSM has responded that it ‘believes it is wrong to dictate what drugs can or cannot be dispensed in statewide pharmacies, and that the cardinal does not speak for all Catholic voters on this matter.’

RSM went on to state that ‘ [c] learly those individuals who will be most dramatically affected will be the poor. Poverty is alive and well in all communities. If the Cardinal gets his way, what’s next? Will pharmacists be allowed to pick and choose what medications they will dispense because of personal morality?’ In addition, the organization commented that there are more critical issues for the archdiocese to deal with, such as the shortage of priests and sexual abuse by the clergy.
