How can any intelligent, self-respecting lesbian, gay or heterosexual support Republican Party office holders, candidates, policy or programs? Once again, Republicans have exemplified themselves through division, discrimination and bigotry toward GLBT people. When the five Republican Cook County Board members recently removed their names from a routine proclamation welcoming the upcoming Gay Games to Chicago, they personified the red-state obstinate bias against gays and lesbians so prevalent today and espoused a belief contrary to most Illinois residents that even Jesus Christ would repudiate. They lack the common decency and courtesy of welcoming visitors to their own community.
These Commissioners, as most Republicans do across the nation, maintain theologically held opinions that are impervious to reason, evidence or argument. They embrace the harmful wedge issues of Gays, Guns and God while neglecting the real issues of equality, poverty, corruption, war and the economy. Too many Republicans today are blinded by the flag and Bible. The pseudo-theocracy that they envision hearken to imagined times and would be the foundation for the American Taliban.
These dangerously deluded people who can neither accept not tolerate those who differ from them would find themselves comfortably at home in history’s most repressive regimes. They must be opposed now and at the ballot box. We should support those corporations which suppost us and support the Gay Games as well.
