Building Stage, a new troupe, combines elements of puppet, mask and miniature work with a broader perspective on physical theater, under artistic director Blake Montgomery, a Redmoon alumnus. The troupe’s second show, Dustbowl Gothic, is an original and largely physical work that examines the dour rural couple with pitchfork in Grant Wood’s famous painting. Six actors portray different aspects of the iconic couple’s history as remembered and/or imagined, and a subtly female perspective emerges although the male is the dominant active figure. When the dust comes, it’s symbolic of a dry relationship, as well as a natural disaster. Building Stage occupies an industrial space with free parking, 412 N. Carpenter.
