A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story, a drama about the murder of a young transgender Latina, posted huge numbers with its Lifetime premiere on June 19.
The film became the network’s most watched original movie this year when it averaged 5.1 million total viewers. The movie was second only to A&E’s Flight 93 (5.9 million total viewers) among all original movies on ad-supported basic cable this year.
A Girl Like Me starred award-winning actress Mercedes Ruehl as Araujo’s mother, Sylvia Guerrero, and J.D. Pardo as Araujo. Famed attorney Gloria Allred, who represented the real Guerrero at the murder trial (and who was featured in an interview in the June 21 issue of Windy City Times), was co-executive producer.
The movie will air again Fri., June 30, at 8 p.m. CT.
