Luna Negra Dance Theater will mark Cinco de Mayo with Sugar in the Raw, a new work by Mexican-American choreographer Michelle Manzanales.
Raw is Manzanales’ expression of her own personal struggles about identity as a Mexican and as an American. She draws on a vast array of tools to convey her own sharp recollections of love, loss, family and spirituality. She also elicits memories from her dancers, asking them to draw on their own experiences and challenging them to put their own images from significant times in their life into the language of dance.
The production is just one of several that will make up Viajes (Journeys), which will run May 3-6 at the Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport. Other segments include Amor y Dolor (Love and Sorrow) and Quinceañera by Eduardo Vilaro, as well as Luna de Miel (Honeymoon) by Gustavo Ramirez Sansano.
Tickets range in price from $25-$45, with $15 tickets for students and children (under 12). Tickets go on sale March 20. For tickets call 312-902-1500 or visit www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets may also be purchased at the Athenaeum Theatre Box Office. The Athenaeum Theatre is located at 2936 N. Southport Avenue, Chicago.
