Gen. Peter Pace—who is probably best known for saying to the Chicago Tribune that homosexuality is ‘immoral’—is slated to appear at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business Management Conference on May 18. However, if certain people have their way, that appearance will not happen.
Within three days of the launch of the new, student-led Campaign to Uninvite General Peter Pace, more than 750 community members signed a petition asking the school and Harris Bank (the event’s sponsor) to cancel Pace’s address. (As of May 1, the number had increased to 995.) The signers, almost all of whom are members of the University of Chicago community, include GSB students, faculty, alumni and staff.
According to a release, the success of the petition drive shows how members of the LGBTA community feel about Pace’s impending appearance. Several organizations, including Gay Liberation Network and Queers & Associates, the University of Chicago’s LGBTA organization, intend to hold a demonstration in front of the Hyatt Regency, site of the conference, on May 18.
