About Face Theatre is offering a most welcome remount of its 2005 hit, Pulp, by Patricia Kane. This affectionate satire of lurid lesbian novels of the 1950s features tough-but-tender military broads; femmes and butches; drag kings; a smoky Chicago girl bar; original songs; and even a happy ending. This all-too-brief revival reunites most of the original cast—only this time Kane herself completes the ensemble. Composer Andre Pluess and lyricists Amy Warren and Kane have added several new songs to the show, and director Jessica Thebus has restaged this wonderfully quirky turn with some new flourishes and a new, expanded scenic design. Windy City Times Theater Editor Jonathan Abarbanel raved about Pulp two years ago, and he’s still a raver; but be that as it may, this is one fun show not to miss. Pulp joins The Color Purple and Penchants and Fantasies: A Light Look at Lesbian Love as the third lesbian love story to open in Chicago in a week. What the devil is going on here? Pulp plays only through May 27; About Face at Victory Gardens Greenhouse, 2257 N. Lincoln; 773-871-3000; $20-$40.
