Chicago police have classified a recent attack of a young, gay man in Rogers Park as a hate crime.
Around 1 a.m. on Aug. 17, three men confronted a 22-year-old-man and called him anti-gay slurs prior to attacking him. The crime occurred in the 6700 block of North Sheridan Road by Loyola University Chicago. Police from the 24th District confirmed with Windy City Times that the victim was punched in the face once, and then all three men fled.
The investigation, which is ongoing, has been turned over to the Chicago Police Department’s Civil Rights Unit, and is being treated as a hate crime.
So far, police do not have enough information to release sketches or detailed descriptions of the attackers.
Police will not identify the victim, who was treated for his injuries at Evanston’s St. Francis Hospital. He has since been released.
