On Thurs., Sept. 13, at the Center on Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted, the Association of Latino Men for Action (ALMA) held a kick-off party for Runway ALMA, an Oct. 12 event that will showcase the works of Latino/a fashion designers and that will feature gay Latinos Alex Perez (who is a broadcast journalist for NBC-5) and J.P. Calderon (a Survivor: Cook Islands contestant who is spotlighted on season two of The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency show). At the kick-off event—which featured food, musicians and even a runway show—ALMA Board President Julio Rodriguez (above, left) told Windy City Times that he hopes ‘to sell out the event, like last year. We’re really excited because we’re honoring two Latino men who, locally and nationally, are really great role models for Latino gay men. We hope that [ultimately] that creates more visibility, so when people think of gay men, they recognize that Latino men are part of that community.’ Photos and text by Andrew Davis; more images at WindyCityTimes.com
