The legalization of medical marijuana took a step closer to being reality in Illinois Wed., March 5, after a public health committee sent the legislation to the full Senate floor after a 6-4 vote.

The measure, SB2865, is sponsored by State Sen. John Cullerton, D-Chicago, and would allow marijuana card holders to receive prescriptions for medical marijuana. The program would only be open to those with certain specific illnesses, including cancer, glaucoma and HIV/AIDS.

In the Illinois House, State Rep. Angelo Saviano, R-River Grove, is the sponsor of a similar measure, HB5938.
