A Steady Rain, Royal George, through April 27. Keith Huff’s harrowing, hard yet poetic cop buddy drama is back and better than before, subtly improved by director Russ Tutterow and galvanized by actors Randy Steinmeyer and Peter DeFaria. Don’t miss! JA

Pitching Penguins, Flaxen Productions, Victory Gardens Greenhouse, through March 16. This workplace comedy wants to be funny, but its guilelessly practical solution to stress in the job market is prophetic in its departure from the conventions of genre comedy. MSB

Slipping, The Side Project; through April 1. Daniel Talbott’s world premiere drama about a self-destructive gay teenager has been extended, no doubt due to the incisive performances of the cast. Also the male nudity probably helps. SCM

Talking it Over, Lifeline Theatre, through March 23. Peter Greenberg’s world-premiere adaptation of Julian Barnes’ novel of the same name is incisive in its dissection of the notion of adultery and romantic obsession. SCM
