The Weby Awards Edition

www.webbyawards.com

The Webby Awards are the Web’s Oscars, or at least its MTV Awards. The Webby’s recognize the best in

over 70 categories ranging from Activism to Youth. And looky!: There’s a Weird category. Huzzah! So let’s

take a look at what was considered to be the ‘best’ in weird this year. Two of the five nominees, ‘I Can Has

Cheezburger?’ and ‘Cute Overload’ have been featured here before. The other three have been in the

queue, but have never quite sifted their way to the top. I’m not sure why one of those, the Webby winner

‘Passive Aggressive Notes,’ didn’t. It’s the sort of thing I usually latch on to. Lost in the shuffle, I guess. In

any case, let’s make things right by taking a look at the three we haven’t covered here before.

Just a friendly Reminder…

www.passiveaggressivenotes.com

Passive aggressive notes is dedicated to little notes left in public places,

the kind designed to vent a beef without having a direct confrontation. I

so have a few submissions for this site. My day job (You didn’t think this

column put food in my belly?!) is at a mega-company and we are rife

with these oh-so-polite-but-you-can-sense-the-outrage-pulsing-beneath

notes. There’s one lady who starts every one of hers with ‘Just a friendly

reminder.’ I swear if letters could sneer…

Les than 250 days to Xmas

www.badgiftemporium.com

The Bad Gift Emporium is dedicated to those horrendous lapses in taste

and sensibility that are occasionally passed on to us as ‘gifts.’ Each entry

has a photo and a little biography, but the best part is that many of them

are available to acquire. The Emporium doesn’t sell the ‘giftrocity’ directly

from. They will simply put you in touch with the current owner so you can

work out your own deal. I’m just bummed that the Sinister Chipmunk isn’t

available. He’d have looked great next to my Evil Elf.

For the person with everything, say it with yarn

www.StitchyMcYarnpants.com

We move from giftrocities to yarntrocities. The Museum of Kitschy Stitches

is the blog of Stitchy McYarnpants. It is dedicated to horrible things that

have been done with yarn. Many of these are just ugly, but some of the

toys have a creepiness that’s right up there with the aforementioned

Sinister Chipmunk. These are the sorts of things that made the word

‘crafts’ into a joke. The accompanying text is snarkolicious. If I were

straight, I might have to marry Stitchy McYarnpants.
