Howard Brown Health Center dedicated a Peace Garden June 6 in memory of Lisa Tonna and Mary M. York, two lesbian activists in Chicago who died of cancer earlier this year. Tonna had been interim executive director of Lesbian Community Cancer (now Care) Project, which is now part of Howard Brown. York had served on LCCP’s board. The garden is on the north side street next to Howard Brown’s building on Sheridan Road. Tonna’s partner, Avis Jamison, and York’s partner, LaGenia Bailey, both thanked the approximately 100 people gathered for coming out to support the dedication. Volunteers from Deloitte, with support from Christy Webber Landscapes and Clear, a community supporter, created the garden.
