Chicago House held its Birdhouse Auction/Cocktail Party June 19 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago. The chic venue was the perfect backdrop for the silent-auction items, which ranged from the traditional to the highly innovative. Also on hand were Kristi Gorsuch and Beth Somers (and treats) from Sweet Miss Giving’s Bakery (www.SweetMissGivings.com), which provides job training and work experience to low-income and disabled people. ‘It’s a six-month internship run twice a year. We have some areas set up in baking production; packaging and assembly for our gift baskets; delivery assistance and customer service; and, eventually we’ll be looking at retail space for a storefront,’ Gorsuch told Windy City Times. ‘We’re teaching [people] transferable skills to get them back into the permanent workforce.’ Photos and text by Andrew Davis.
