Lupe Fiasco entertained teens at the Park West on Sunday, Aug. 17, in an invitation only concert sponsored by Coca-cola.
The’ Refresh Your Flow Tour’ hit major cities along with Chicago to give teens an opportunity to meet the artist responsible for the songs ‘Superstar’ and ‘ Paris Tokyo.’
With the line wrapped around the building, Lupe sat down for a few minutes to talk to Windy City Times.
Windy City Times: Many people may not know that you are from Chicago. Where did you grow up?
Lupe Fiasco: West Side, Madison and Kedzie. I went to school there until 6th grade then moved to the suburbs.
WCT: And now you are a Grammy winner. You seem like you have surrounded yourself with amazing artists. What was it like performing with Kanye West, Snoop Dogg and Jill Scott?
LF: It was dope, crazy experiences with Patrick from Fall Out Boy and The Roots. It’s a dream come true.
WCT: I love your song ‘Hip Hop Saved my Life.’ What inspired it?
LF: When I did that song a year and half ago, Hip Hop was getting a lot of bad press. I wanted to put a statement out there that Hip Hop saves a lot of people. Sometimes that’s all people have got.
WCT: How did you get involved with the tour?
LF: Coca-cola invited me out. This gave me an opportunity to perform my music for a large section of my fan, which are underage kids and teenagers. I have done this venue before. This group can’t come to the venues that are 18 and over.
WCT: Do you have other tours planned for the future?
LF: I am putting together a big college tour for the fall. Then I am going back overseas.
WCT: And you just did Lollapalooza here in Chicago, so you are all over the place. What is the next step for you musically?
LF: Working on my next album and working on my label.
