Openly gay Australian Olympic gold medalist Matthew Mitcham has announced he will travel to Cologne, Germany to be part of this year’s Gay Games, according to a Federation of Gay Games press release.
“I’m excited to be part of something so important for our communities around the globe. This event brings lesbian and gay life out on the court, onto the track, and into the pool,” Mitcham said. “Being ‘out’ means for me being just as I am with nothing to be ashamed about and no reasons to hide. Participating at the Gay Games is a great chance for all gays and lesbians to show that we as a community are not like the stereotypes the straight media loves to portray.”
Mitcham will be making appearances at several events but will not compete. In addition, he will detail his trip to Germany and participation in the Gay Games on his Facebook page (www.facebook.com/pages/Matthew-Mitcham-Olympian/23129711303).
