The Nature of Diamonds explores all aspects of this extraordinary mineral, from its geological origins; to its place in history, art and decoration; to its uses in modern technology and research.
Individual standouts include the 128.54-carat Tiffany Diamond—one of the world’s largest yellow diamonds—and the Incomparable Diamond, which weighs 407.48 carats. There are also decorative pieces owned by celebrities such as Sir Elton John, Mae West and Joan Crawford.
In addition, there is the permanent exhibit known as the Grainger Hall of Gems, which features rare jewels and gold objects from around the world. Highlights include an Egyptian garnet necklace more than 3,400 years old; a platinum necklace that has more than 90 carats of rubies and several hundred diamonds; and a modern pendant that contains a 28.84-carat tanzanite stone, an extremely rare gem.
