Mexican singer Paquita la del Barrio is slated to hold a press conference to apologize for recently saying that she would prefer to see a child die on the streets than have a same-sex couple adopt him or her, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Originally, la del Barrio, 62, said she did not like the part of Mexico City’s new marriage-equality law that lets gay couples adopt children. In fact, the balladeer said that ” [i] t’s better that the child die instead of that life for the little creatures.” Several groups, including the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), condemned the singer’s statements and asked her to apologize.
la del Barrio’s apology event is set to take place March 23 at the gay disco Spartacus, located in the Mexico City suburb of Ciudad Nezahualcoyotl.
Her songs are known for taking on sexist men, according to Wikipedia. One of la del Barrio’s most famous songs, “Rata de dos patas” (“Two-legged rat”), compares a rat to a man.
