Chicago Harvey Milk Week of Action brings together grassroots
Chicago, Il – The International Day Against Homophobia, May 17, kicks off a week of local actions that end on May 22, what would have been Harvey Milk’s 80th Birthday. Activists, community members and organizations across the Chicagoland area will be engaged in a full week of activities that help educate, fight for legislative action and bring groups of activists and community members together. The LGBTQ community is urged to participate in the week of action to reaffirm our demand for full equality in America for all LGBT people. The local organizers for the Chicago Harvey Milk Week of Action are LGBT Change, Join the Impact Chicago, and the Gay Liberation Network.
The Chicago Harvey Milk Week of Action will begin on the International Day Against Homophobia with a rally in protest opposing anti-LGBT hate in Uganda, Kenya and Malawi. This will take place at the Northeast entrance of Millennium Park at 5:30pm. Also on that day, there will be a film screening of Fish Out of Water with discussion from the Director/Creator, Ky Dickens. Fish Out of Water is a powerful documentary that explores the impassioned relationship between homosexuality and the Bible. The screening will be held at All Saint Episcopal Church at 7pm. Beginning at noon on Thursday, May 20, there will be a flash mob in Federal Plaza inviting onlookers to participate in creative political street theater to demand full equality from our government. On Friday evening, Queer Noise, from 8-10, is an open mic night hosted by Cameron Esposito at New Wave Cafe. On Harvey Milk Day of Action, May 22, there will be a Rally calling for Full Federal Equality for LGBT People. The rally will take place at Congress and Michigan, followed by a march up Michigan Avenue. For a full listing of the events, visit our website at chicagomilkweek.wordpress.com.
