Last night, a federal court in Mississippi denied Copiah County School District’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought against it by Ceara Sturgis, who was excluded from her yearbook for wearing a tuxedo in her senior portrait rather than the drape typically reserved for girls. The order says that the district must explain why Sturgis was required to wear a drape to be included in the yearbook.

“We’re glad that Ceara will get to have her day in court. No student should ever be excluded from important rites of passage just for being who they are,” said Joshua Block, staff attorney with the ACLU Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Project.
