An Illinois 10-year-old took her own life last week as a result of bullying, her parents believe.
Ashlynn R. Conner, 10, of Ridge Farm died Nov. 11. She was buried Nov. 16.
According to her online obituary, Connor was an honor-roll student at Ridge Farm Elementary who was active in the school’s band.
Her mother, Stacy Connor, has spoken publicly about her belief that her daughter hung herself because she could not endure bullying at school.
Connor told the Today Show that kids at school had called her a “slut” and that she had asked school officials to intervene on multiple occasions. The Associated Press also reported that students called her a “boy” after getting her hair cut short.
Georgetown-Ridge Farm District Superintendent Kevin Tate said in a statement that the district works hard to make sure students feel safe at school and that they had provided grief counselors to young people following Connor’s death.
