Chicago- The members and friends of aChurch4Me? MCC are pleased to announce their move to a new worship space, Overdier Hall at 1545 W. Morse Ave., Chicago, within the existing United Church of Rogers Park United Methodist Church. The move follows a nearly six month long search for a more permanent home for this rapidly evolving and growing faith community. On March 25th the congregation voted to partner with United Church of Rogers Park United Methodist Church as two separate faith communities who share many of the same values and vision for ministry. Inaugurating its new home on April 1, 2012 with a special Palm Sunday celebration at 11 AM, aChurch4Me? MCC will continue to worship in this space every Sunday.
aChurch4Me? MCC defines itself as ” a radically organic faith community where: love is a blessing; diversity a gift; worship a celebration; and life a journey”. Led by the dynamic, openly lesbian pastor, Reverend Rachelle Brown, aChurch4Me? is a member of the forty-three year old Christian denomination, Metropolitan Community Churches or MCC. Since its inception, when it began holding public worship services five years ago, diversity and social justice have been deeply held values of this very different church. That says Rev. Brown, “is what makes our new neighborhood and our partnership with United Church of Rogers Park such a perfect fit. God is leading us in new directions, calling us to live into our mission and values.”
Rogers Park is one the most culturally and economically diverse neighborhoods in Chicago and the country. More than eighty languages are spoken within its boundaries. For decades this inclusive neighborhood has been a haven for artists, immigrants, and increasingly the city’s GLBT population. Attractively priced housing, cultural venues, various gay and lesbian owned bars, and laid back atmosphere have lured many individuals and businesses from pricier Lakeview and Andersonville. The addition of a church that holds GLBT spirituality as one of its main areas of focus seems like a natural. According to one member of aChurch4Me?, “I live near the church’s new space. I know we’ll be welcome and can add something of real value to this community. The opportunities are awesome!”.
