Art Johnston, speaking to the hundreds who attended the 30th-anniversary celebration for Sidetrack June 13, asked for cheers from those who were at the Lakeview bar in April and May, 1982, when it opened—and many cheered, claiming they were there.

Johnston paused, and then asked how many weren’t even born in 1982 when Sidetrack opened—many more cheered.

It was a night of memories—past, present and future—for attendees of, literally, all ages, 21 and up.

“It was an incredible evening, with a lot of friends and lot of memories,” said Sidetrack general manager Chuck Hyde. “We’re glad we were able to share the night with everyone. It was a surreal evening; we’re blessed.”

The event was highlighted by an amazing and entertaining—and certainly not surprising—video countdown of the top 30 videos played at Sidetrack over the past 30 years.

The number-one video was “And I’m Telling You” by Jennifer Holiday.

The first video ever played at Sidetrack, back in 1982, was “Eve of the War” by Jeff Wayne.

The event also was a successful benefit for GroceryLand—the food-providing arm of the HIV/AIDS organization Vital Bridges. Attendees donated enough personal items that will help the needy for the next three months, Johnston said.

“It’s always overwhelming what our clients do, and what they did for GroceryLand truly helps a lot, a lot of our friends and just a lot of people around the city,” Hyde said.
