Death and Harry Houdini, The House Theatre of Chicago at Chopin Theatre, through Aug. 17. Every time this five-time revival is remounted in a different space, it gets more dramatic and more exciting. But stunt-illusionist Dennis Watson can’t risk his health for our entertainment forever, so see it now before it disappears for good. MSB
Moment, Steep Theatre, through Aug. 18. A modern-day Irish clan is still dealing with the fallout of a rash teenage moment years ago in the U.S. premiere of Deirdre Kinahan’s powerful drama examining family dynamics and resentments. SCM
Three Sisters, Steppenwolf Theatre, through Aug. 26. Despite a few reservations, I find this production is handsome and heartfelt in a vigorous, clear new English version by Tracy Letts. A fine cast and director Anna D. Shapiro dispel the notion that “nothing happens” in Chekhov. JA
What’s the T?, About Face Youth Theatre at National Museum of Mexican Art, through Aug. 5. Notions of “safe spaces” for diverse LGBT youth in Chicago’s Boystown neighborhood are insightfully and entertainingly explored in this wonderfully collaborative and very timely piece by playwright Sara Kerastas and the About Face Youth Theatre Ensemble.
