In the latest anti-gay action by Chicago’s Cardinal Francis George, the archbishop referred to gay relationships as “friendships” at a Sunday mass at which 400 married couples renewed their vows, according to a CBS Chicago report.
“There must surely be ways in our civil society, where we can honor friendships, where we can respect other people, without destroying the nature of marriage,” George said, according to CBS, adding that society will be “worse” if same-sex marriage becomes legal.
George’s comments are the latest in a string of anti-gay statements from the Cardinal. Last year, he repeatedly compared Chicago’s Pride Parade to a Ku Klux Klan gathering. George later apologized.
