Single-stall restrooms, or “family” restrooms, as they had been known, will now be known as “all-gender” restrooms in signage on the Illinois State University campus in Normal.
The change was voluntary, and implemented after officials noticed the signage was being used on other college campuses, videtteonline.com reported July 1. Only a handful of restrooms are affected by the change, as there are only about 10 single-stall restrooms on campus, and none of their functionalities were altered.
“While most people may not even know the sign has changed, I’m anticipating those in the LGBTQ community will appreciate it,” Michael Shane McCreery, director and ethics officer in the Office of Equal Opportunity, Ethics and Access, told videtteonline.com. “Small changes can have a big impact.”
ISU will host the 2015 Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Ally College Conference, the largest LGBT college conference in the country, in February.
