The Legacy Project is a Chicago-based LGBT organization focused on preserving history through The Legacy Walk on Halsted and other outreach efforts. The Legacy Wall is an interactive exhibit featuring a diverse cross-section of LGBTs that will travel across the state for 15 months, after which it is expected to tour around the U.S., highlighting the contributions of LGBT people to world history and culture.
Legacy Project Founder and Executive Director Victor Salvo was joined by others at the kick-off of The Legacy Wall. Ellen Meyers of Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White’s office said her agency worked with the Illinois Department of Human Rights, the Illinois State Library and the Illinois Department of Tourism to bring the exhibit to Springfield.
Anthony Papini, head of the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, spoke of the importance of The Legacy Project to students trying to learn about LGBT history, and teachers looking for resources. Mona Noriega, commissioner of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations, said the project helps break down barriers and decrease crimes against the community.
Also addressing the crowd were Legacy board President Ralph Kennedy and Legacy Development Director Christopher Barrett Politan.
