… and hugs, back slapping, and good feelings too at the PFLAG “Kisses from Mom” event on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 14 from 3-9 p.m. in front of Sidetrack, 3349 N Halsted St, Chicago. About two dozen PFLAG moms will give back this Mother’s Day by rotating shifts throughout the event.

John Hickey, PFLAG Northern Illinois Council President says that “PFLAG is accepting donations in exchange for a (chocolate) kiss from mom to help the organization advocate for a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.”

PFLAG began in 1972 when Jeanne Manford marched with her son in New York’s Christopher Street Liberation Day March, the precursor to today’s Pride parade. In the next years, groups sprang up around the country offering “safe havens” and mutual support for parents with gay and lesbian children. Since that time, PFLAG has grown both in numbers and in strength creating what is today, the largest national parent-centered advocacy group in the country. Most recently, PFLAG has broadened its mission to include transgender people.

Donations to PFLAG Northern Illinois will be accepted on Sunday, May 14th from 3:00 — 9:00 P.M. at Sidetrack, at www.pflagillinois.org, or sent to PFLAG Council of Northern Illinois, P.O. Box 734, Elmhurst, IL 60126.
