Jane Addams was inducted into the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame in 2008. When Addams founded Hull-House, her close companion in life and work was Ellen Gates Starr. They built Hull-House together. By the mid-1890s, Starr left full-time residence at Hull-House with Addams, and Mary Rozet Smith, a donor to Hull-House, had become Addams’s personal companion. Smith and Addams remained together the rest of their lives.
