Cardinal Blase Cupich, following a July 17 speech at the City Club of Chicago, spoke about the importance of maintaining respect for LGBT individuals, America Magazine—an online Jesuit publication—reported July 18.
Cupich suggested that church officials and others need to address the community using terminology the community prefers, such as “gay,” “lesbian,” or “LGBT” rather than euphemisms that off-handedly dismiss them for their same-sex attraction.
“People should be called the way that they want to be called rather than us coming up with terms that maybe we’re more comfortable with,” he said.
Cupich has maintained a less oppositional approach to the LGBT community than his predecessor, Francis George, but has not revised any of the Diocese’s previous stances on same-sex marriage.
