A coalition of social justice, immigration advocacy, anti-capitalist and left-wing organizations will be gathering at the Gary/Chicago International Airport to peacefully protest deportation flights on Friday, Jan. 18, 2019.

United under the banner #StopGaryDeportations, the coalition is organized by Northwest Indiana Resistance (NWIR) with support from Chicago Democratic Socialists of America’s (CDSA) Immigrants’ Rights Committee.

While Chicago and Gary are both officially Welcoming Cities, they have long cooperated with the Department of Homeland Security and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain and deport immigrants and refugees from Northwest Indiana, Chicago and the surrounding communities. The Gary/Chicago Airport, Gary Jet Center and Chicago City Council are all complicit in allowing ICE to operate with impunity in the Chicagoland/Northwest Indiana area. Shamefully, these entities continue to profit from deportations that tear communities and families apart.

Speakers will be Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, Chicago Alderman, 35th Ward; Ruth Needleman, NWIR; Gaby Benitez, Detention Watch Network; Byron Sigcho Lopez, Candidate for Chicago Alderman, 25th Ward.
