Sentimental Journey is a story most older baby boomers know well: how World War II delayed marriage and family for millions of men and women, and romances remained kindled by love letters and popular songs. In this telling, treasured Chicago actor Ross Lehman—whose award-winning work has taken him to Broadway and London—writes and performs the story of his own parents, peppered with the hit songs that inspired and connected them, such as the iconic 1944 title song. His father was a bombardier—very high-risk in WWII—and a German prisoner of war, and his mother was a young career woman before the longed-for “return to normalcy” in the post-War 1950s. Lehman is a wonderful actor, comedian and singer who should bring art, skill, love and sentiment to his story, which is directed by veteran Mark Lecoco. Sentimental Journey plays the Citadel Theatre (Lake Forest) through May 26. Visit http://CitadelTheatre.org or call 847-735-8554, ext. 1; admission is $40-$45 each.
