Iconic actress and longtime animal-rights activist Doris Day has died at 97, media outlets reported.
USA Today noted that Day became a touchstone of pop culture, referred to in many TV shows and movies (because of such tunes as “Que Sera Sera”) as well as songs like Wham!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.” Moreover, she became a favorite of many LGBT fans because of her ’50s and ’60s films as well as her friendship with the late closeted actor Rock Hudson.
Day became the first female since Shirley Temple to rule the box office—a reign that roughly ran from 1955 to ’65. She made 39 films, ranging from the melodrama Midnight Lace to sex comedies like Pillow Talk, Lover Come Back and That Touch of Mink; co-stars included Cary Grant, James Garner, Clark Gable and, most memorably, Hudson.
In her later years, Day oversaw two animal-welfare groups and usually only made public appearances if it benefitted animals.
